Kansas: Beef Country in the Middle of the Map

Kansas is the geographic center of the lower 48, and it shows in the freight: I-70 and I-35 cross here, Kansas City's west side is a rail-and-truck logistics hub, and southwest Kansas packs more beef than almost anywhere on earth.

🛣️ Major Kansas Freight Hubs

The Kansas side of Kansas City holds the metro's industrial west and the BNSF intermodal complex at Edgerton. Wichita is the state's manufacturing center on I-35, while Dodge City, Garden City and Liberal — the "Golden Triangle" — run the beef plants.

Kansas City, KSZIP: 66111 · I-70/I-435 west industrial belt
EdgertonZIP: 66021 · BNSF intermodal & Logistics Park KC
WichitaZIP: 67219 · I-35 manufacturing & distribution
Dodge CityZIP: 67801 · Beef packing & US-50/US-400
Garden CityZIP: 67846 · Beef packing & feedlot country
LiberalZIP: 67901 · Beef packing & US-54 to the Panhandle

🌡️ Kansas Climate & Reefer Demand

Kansas runs the full range: summers above 100°F on the western plains, winters with ice storms and sub-zero wind chill. Beef out of the packing plants ships in reefers every week, whichever way the thermometer points.

Year-round: Boxed beef from Dodge City, Garden City and Liberal heads to distribution centers in Kansas City, Denver, Dallas and Chicago.

Summer: Heat on I-70 and I-35 keeps reefer units at full load — and the wheat harvest fills the highways with farm traffic in June.

December – February: Ice storms can close I-70 for hours; drivers who watch the KanDrive feed and plan around them keep their miles up.

🚦 Your Kansas Lanes with Astel

Astel's corridors run West ↔ Midwest, and Kansas is the I-70 bridge between them. Drivers load in Kansas City, Wichita or the beef triangle and run I-70 west to Denver or east to St. Louis, I-35 north to Kansas City and on to Chicago, or south to Dallas. We're growing — drivers must be ready to run all 48 contiguous states.

📊 Kansas Freight by the Numbers

Wide-open country that moves a lot of protein.

Top 3 Kansas is one of the top three beef-processing states in the U.S. — together with Nebraska and Texas it handles well over half of the nation's fed-cattle slaughter
6,000/day Head of cattle processed daily at the National Beef plant in Liberal alone — one of the largest beef plants in the world, with Dodge City close behind
I-70 × I-35 Two major Interstates cross Kansas — I-70 straight to Denver and St. Louis, I-35 to Oklahoma City, Dallas and Minneapolis
Cashless The Kansas Turnpike went fully cashless in July 2024 — transponder or plate billing only, with truck-parking availability signs at service areas

Kansas CDL Class A Requirements

Already hold your Kansas CDL-A? You're ready to apply right now. Not yet licensed? Here's exactly what the Kansas Department of Revenue — Division of Vehicles (CDL) requires.

🏫 ELDT Training Entry-Level Driver Training from an FMCSA-registered provider Pre-CDL Step
🩺 DOT Medical Exam Medical Examiner's Certificate confirming fitness to operate a CMV Required

📅 OTR Experience 1+ year over-the-road experience preferred Preferred by Astel
⚠️
Kansas-specific note for OTR drivers: the plains give you nothing to hide behind — crosswinds on I-70 west of Salina push a 53-foot trailer hard, winter ice storms glaze the whole state overnight, and the Kansas Turnpike (I-35/I-70/I-335) has been fully cashless since 2024, so a K-TAG or fleet transponder is a must. As a company driver on Astel's fleet equipment, maintenance and compliance are handled by us — you focus on the road. For the most current KS CDL requirements, visit ksrevenue.gov.

Kansas Driver FAQ

How much do truck drivers earn in Kansas with Astel?
Astel drivers gross $2,400–2,700+ per week, which works out to $90,000–$110,000 per year. The rate is a flat $0.80 per mile for drivers with 1+ year of experience — with a guaranteed $2,400 weekly minimum and a $2,000 sign-on bonus — and all miles are paid — loaded and deadhead, calculated ZIP-to-ZIP.
Do I need to live in Kansas to apply?
No. We hire CDL-A drivers from all 48 contiguous states. Kansas is one of our active hiring regions: orientation takes place at our Chicago yard — an easy I-35/I-80 run from Kansas City — and then you run West–Midwest lanes that cross Kansas on I-70 and I-35 all the time.
What freight will I haul from Kansas?
Mostly refrigerated: boxed beef out of Dodge City, Garden City and Liberal, grocery freight through the Kansas City distribution belt, and produce and meat relayed between Denver, Dallas and Chicago. Beef does not have an off-season, so reefer loads out of Kansas stay steady.
What are the requirements to get hired?
A valid CDL Class A, age 21 or older, and a clean driving record. One or more years of OTR experience is preferred. Newer drivers can still apply — a security deposit applies only with under 3 months of OTR experience.
How often will I be home?
The schedule is OTR: 4+ weeks on the road followed by about 1 week at home. Routes include night dispatch, so you should be comfortable driving nights.
