Maryland: The Mid-Atlantic Crossroads

Maryland packs a major seaport, the Baltimore–Washington consumer belt, and the I-70 / I-81 gateway to the Midwest into one small state. If you're based in Maryland, you're a day's drive from Chicago and an hour from a dozen distribution centers.

🛣️ Major Maryland Freight Hubs

The Port of Baltimore anchors the east, the Jessup food market feeds the Baltimore–Washington corridor, and Hagerstown has become the Mid-Atlantic's warehouse capital where I-70 meets I-81. Across the bay, the Eastern Shore ships poultry out of Salisbury every day.

Baltimore (Dundalk)ZIP: 21222 · Dundalk & Seagirt marine terminals
JessupZIP: 20794 · Maryland Food Center — produce & seafood market
HagerstownZIP: 21740 · I-70/I-81 distribution capital
SalisburyZIP: 21801 · Eastern Shore poultry hub
ElktonZIP: 21921 · I-95 Cecil County warehouse belt
FrederickZIP: 21701 · I-70/I-270 logistics junction

🌡️ Maryland Climate & Reefer Demand

Maryland summers are hot and humid — 90°F+ with heavy moisture in the Chesapeake region — so poultry, seafood, and produce move only on temperature control. Winters bring occasional ice storms and heat-mode reefer runs.

Year-round: The Delmarva poultry industry ships chilled and frozen chicken out of Salisbury and the Eastern Shore every week — one of the most stable reefer sources on the East Coast.

April – November: Chesapeake Bay blue crab and seafood season, plus Eastern Shore vegetables — sweet corn, tomatoes, watermelons — heading to the Jessup market and beyond.

November – December: Holiday grocery surge in the Baltimore–Washington metro pushes reefer demand to its annual peak.

🚦 Your Maryland Lanes with Astel

Astel's core corridors run West ↔ Midwest, anchored at our Chicago yard. Maryland drivers load in Baltimore, Jessup, and Hagerstown and head west on I-70 and I-76/I-80 through Pennsylvania and Ohio toward Columbus, Indianapolis, and Chicago. We're growing — drivers must be ready to run all 48 contiguous states.

📊 Maryland Freight by the Numbers

Maryland's freight market is far bigger than the map suggests.

#1 The Port of Baltimore is the top U.S. port for roll-on/roll-off farm and construction machinery and handled roughly 750,000 autos in 2024
300M+ Broiler chickens are raised on Maryland's Eastern Shore each year — nearly half of the state's farm output, all of it moving in reefers
I-70 + I-81 Meet at Hagerstown — the Mid-Atlantic's warehouse capital and the direct lane west to Ohio, Indiana, and Chicago
9M+ People in the combined Baltimore–Washington metro region — one of the densest consumer markets on the East Coast

Maryland CDL Class A Requirements

Already hold your Maryland CDL-A? You're ready to apply right now. Not yet licensed? Here's exactly what the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) requires.

🏫 ELDT Training Entry-Level Driver Training from an FMCSA-registered provider Pre-CDL Step
🩺 DOT Medical Exam Medical Examiner's Certificate confirming fitness to operate a CMV Required

🧹 Clean Record No DUI, no at-fault accidents, no serious traffic violations on record Required by Astel
📅 OTR Experience 1+ year over-the-road experience preferred Preferred by Astel
⚠️
Maryland-specific note for OTR drivers: Baltimore's two harbor crossings — the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) and the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895) — ban most hazmat and enforce height limits, so trucks with restricted cargo route around via I-695, and the I-95 corridor between Baltimore and Washington is one of the most congested in the country. As a company driver on Astel's fleet equipment, maintenance and compliance are handled by us — you focus on the road. For the most current MD CDL requirements, visit mva.maryland.gov.

The rate is a flat $0.80 per mile for drivers with 1+ year of experience — with a guaranteed $2,400 weekly minimum and a $2,000 sign-on bonus — and all miles are paid — loaded and deadhead, calculated ZIP-to-ZIP.
Do I need to live in Maryland to apply?
No. We hire CDL-A drivers from all 48 contiguous states. Maryland is one of our active hiring regions: orientation takes place at our Chicago yard, then you run lanes that regularly load in and out of Baltimore, Jessup, and Hagerstown on the way to the Midwest.
What freight will I haul from Maryland?
Mostly refrigerated: Eastern Shore poultry out of Salisbury, produce and seafood from the Jessup market, port freight from Baltimore, and grocery loads from the Hagerstown and I-95 distribution belts. Reefer volume in Maryland holds up year-round.
What are the requirements to get hired?
A valid CDL Class A, age 21 or older, and a clean driving record. One or more years of OTR experience is preferred. Newer drivers can still apply — a security deposit applies only with under 3 months of OTR experience.

The schedule is OTR: 4+ weeks on the road followed by about 1 week at home. Routes include night dispatch, so you should be comfortable driving nights.
