Why Massachusetts Drivers Choose Astel
Our owner is a former truck driver who built the company he wished existed. 18 years later — we're still growing and still treating drivers like people, not numbers.
Massachusetts: New England's Freight Engine
Massachusetts is where New England's freight starts and ends: the Port of Boston, the New England Produce Center, and the I-90 / I-495 warehouse belt feed seven million consumers. If you're based here, the Mass Pike is your straight line to the Midwest.
🛣️ Major Massachusetts Freight Hubs
Greater Boston is dense and expensive, so distribution has pushed outward along I-495 and I-90 — Worcester, Westfield, and the Taunton–Mansfield corridor now carry the warehouse load, while Chelsea and South Boston handle the perishables and the containers.
🌡️ Massachusetts Climate & Reefer Demand
Massachusetts runs reefers in both directions of the thermometer: summers in the 85–95°F range keep produce and seafood on temperature control, and winters below 0°F mean the same units run in heat mode to protect loads from freezing.
September – November: Cranberry harvest on the South Shore and
Cape Cod — Massachusetts is the nation's second-largest producer, and the crop
moves out under refrigeration for juice, sauce, and fresh markets.
Year-round: New Bedford scallops and Boston seafood ship frozen
and chilled to the Midwest every week of the year, and the Chelsea produce market
restocks New England grocery chains daily.
Winter: Nor'easters and ice on the Mass Pike thin out the driver
pool — experienced OTR drivers who handle New England winters are in demand.
🚦 Your Massachusetts Lanes with Astel
Astel's core corridors run West ↔ Midwest, and our Chicago yard is the anchor. Massachusetts drivers load in Boston, Chelsea, and Springfield and take I-90 straight west across New York and Ohio toward Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago. We're growing — drivers must be ready to run all 48 contiguous states.
📊 Massachusetts Freight by the Numbers
A small state with an outsized appetite for refrigerated freight.
