North Dakota Feeds the Midwest

North Dakota grows more spring wheat, canola, sunflowers, dry beans and honey than any other state, and the Red River Valley turns its potatoes into frozen fries at the Simplot plant in Grand Forks and the Cavendish Farms plant in Jamestown. I-94 runs from Fargo straight into Minneapolis and Chicago, and the freight here is built for the Midwest.

Major North Dakota Freight Hubs

Fargo–West Fargo is the state's crossroads. I-94 meets I-29 here, Amazon opened a one-million-square-foot fulfillment center, the largest building in North Dakota, and Case IH and Bobcat build equipment nearby. Grand Forks and Jamestown are the frozen-potato towns, Bismarck anchors the west, and Williston is the Bakken oil field.

North Dakota Climate & Reefer Demand

North Dakota is a heat-mode state. Winter lows of −20°F are routine, and Fargo has seen −30°F, so reefers run warm to protect potatoes, beans and honey. Summers reach 85–90°F, and the same units switch back to cooling for frozen fries and dairy.

September and October. Potato and sugar-beet harvest fills the Red River Valley. Trucks line up at the Simplot and Cavendish plants and at the American Crystal Sugar factories in Hillsboro and Drayton.

Year-round. Frozen french fries out of Grand Forks and Jamestown ship at −10°F to Midwest distribution centers every week, and North Dakota honey, the nation's largest crop, moves in bulk drums to packers.

Winter. Ground blizzards and closures on I-94 and I-29 thin out the driver pool. Experienced OTR drivers who can run the Northern Plains in January are in demand.

Your North Dakota Lanes with Astel

Astel's core corridors run West ↔ Midwest, and our Chicago yard is the anchor. North Dakota drivers load in Fargo, Grand Forks and Jamestown and take I-94 east through Minneapolis and Madison to Chicago, about 640 miles from Fargo to our yard. We're growing, and drivers must be ready to run all 48 contiguous states.

North Dakota Freight by the Numbers

A farm state whose crops leave in trucks, most of them heading east.

#1 North Dakota grows 57% of U.S. spring wheat and leads the nation in canola, sunflowers, flaxseed and dry edible beans
27% Share of all U.S. honey produced in North Dakota. It's the top honey state, and honey ships under temperature control
450M lbs Annual frozen-potato capacity of the Cavendish Farms plant in Jamestown after its $150 million expansion, all of it reefer freight
I-94 + I-29 352 miles of I-94 and 218 miles of I-29 cross at Fargo, a straight line east to Chicago and south to Kansas City

North Dakota CDL Class A Requirements

Already hold your North Dakota CDL-A? You're ready to apply right now. If you're not yet licensed, here's exactly what the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) Driver License office requires.

Requirement Details Status for Astel Position
Minimum Age 21+ years for interstate (OTR) driving, required for all 48-state runs Required
Valid ND Driver's License Current, non-suspended North Dakota driver's license Required
Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) Must hold CLP for minimum 14 days before the skills test Pre-CDL Step
ELDT Training Entry-Level Driver Training from an FMCSA-registered provider Pre-CDL Step
DOT Medical Exam Medical Examiner's Certificate confirming fitness to operate a CMV Required
Knowledge Tests ND General Knowledge, Combination Vehicles (Class A), Air Brakes Pass to Obtain CDL
Skills Test Pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, on-road driving evaluation Pass to Obtain CDL
Reefer Endorsement No special endorsement required for standard reefer freight in North Dakota Not Required
Clean Record No DUI, no at-fault accidents, no serious traffic violations on record Required by Astel
OTR Experience 1+ year over-the-road experience preferred Preferred by Astel
⚠️
North Dakota-specific note for OTR drivers: the Northern Plains deliver the coldest interstate weather in the Lower 48. Ground blizzards and whiteouts hit I-94 and I-29, wind chills fall far below zero, and NDDOT can close both interstates for hours. Reefer units run in heat mode most of the winter to keep potatoes and beans from freezing. As a company driver on Astel's fleet equipment, maintenance and compliance are handled by us, so you focus on the road. For the most current ND CDL requirements, visit dot.nd.gov.
