Vermont Runs on Maple, Dairy and the Road to Canada

Vermont is small, but nearly everything it ships is temperature-controlled: more than half of America's maple syrup, 63% of New England's milk, Ben & Jerry's ice cream and Cabot cheddar. I-89 and I-91 link the state to Montreal on one end and to the New York Thruway on the other, and from there it is I-90 straight to Chicago.

Major Vermont Freight Hubs

Chittenden County (Burlington and Williston) carries the retail and warehouse load along I-89. St. Albans runs the Ben & Jerry's plants and the dairy farms of Franklin County, Middlebury is Cabot's biggest cheese plant, and Brattleboro on I-91 is home to C&S Wholesale Grocers, one of the largest grocery wholesalers in the country.

BurlingtonZIP: 05401 · Largest city, Lake Champlain, I-89 corridor
WillistonZIP: 05495 · Retail and distribution cluster at I-89 Exit 12
St. AlbansZIP: 05478 · Ben & Jerry's plants, Franklin County dairy belt
MiddleburyZIP: 05753 · Agri-Mark / Cabot Creamery cheese plant
BrattleboroZIP: 05301 · C&S Wholesale Grocers headquarters and DC on I-91
Highgate SpringsZIP: 05460 · I-89 border crossing to Quebec, open 24/7 for trucks

Vermont Climate & Reefer Demand

Vermont reefers work both ends of the dial. Summers in the 80–85°F range keep dairy and produce cold, and winter lows of −10 to −20°F put the same units in heat mode so syrup and cheese do not freeze in transit, apples included.

March and April. Sugaring season brings sap runs when days thaw and nights freeze, and the state's 8 million taps produce more than 3 million gallons of syrup that move out in drums and totes to packers.

Year-round. Milk and cheese ship daily out of Franklin and Addison counties, whey included, and Ben & Jerry's pints leave St. Albans frozen at −20°F for distribution centers across the country.

September – October. Apple harvest fills the Champlain Valley, then the winter grocery run starts: C&S and the Williston DCs restock New England stores through the snow.

Your Vermont Lanes with Astel

Astel's core corridors run West ↔ Midwest, and our Chicago yard is the anchor. Vermont drivers load in Burlington, St. Albans and Brattleboro, cross into New York on I-89 or I-91 and pick up I-90 west through Buffalo and Cleveland to Chicago. We're growing, and drivers must be ready to run all 48 contiguous states.

Burlington → Chicago St. Albans → Chicago Brattleboro → Cleveland Middlebury → Detroit White River Junction → Indianapolis Burlington → Columbus

Vermont Freight by the Numbers

The smallest freight state in New England, and one of the most refrigerated.

3.06M gal Vermont's 2025 maple syrup crop, about 54% of all U.S. production and #1 in the nation every year for over a century
63% Share of New England's milk produced on Vermont farms, a $2.2 billion dairy business that moves entirely in reefers
~1M pints Ben & Jerry's output per day from its Vermont plants, frozen freight leaving St. Albans and Waterbury year-round
I-89 + I-91 Two interstates and two border crossings: Highgate Springs handles roughly 130,000 trucks a year, one of the busiest ports on the northern border

Vermont CDL Class A Requirements

Already hold your Vermont CDL-A? You're ready to apply right now. If you're not yet licensed, here's exactly what the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires.

OTR Experience 1+ year over-the-road experience preferred Preferred by Astel
⚠️
Vermont-specific note for OTR drivers: the Green Mountains put real grades on I-89 and I-91, winters bring ice, nor'easters and lake-effect snow off Lake Champlain, and mud season closes many of the state's dirt roads to heavy trucks in spring. Add the Highgate Springs and Derby Line border crossings on the Canada run. As a company driver on Astel's fleet equipment, maintenance and compliance are handled by us, so you focus on the road. For the most current VT CDL requirements, visit dmv.vermont.gov.

Do I need to live in Vermont to apply?
