Montana Big Sky, Long Miles

Montana is the fourth-largest state by area with barely a million people, which means every grocery pallet in Billings or Missoula rode in on a truck, and every load of beef, lentils, and seed potatoes rides out the same way. I-90 and I-94 run straight east to the Midwest, and I-15 links Canada to the Mountain West.

Major Montana Freight Hubs

Billings is the state's largest city and its distribution center at the I-90/I-94 junction. Missoula anchors the west, Great Falls the wheat country along I-15, Butte sits where I-90 and I-15 cross, and Sweet Grass is the truck gateway to Alberta.

BillingsZIP: 59101 · I-90/I-94 junction, refineries & regional DCs
MissoulaZIP: 59808 · I-90 west-side industrial and cross-dock parks
Great FallsZIP: 59404 · I-15 grain and food-processing hub of the Golden Triangle
ButteZIP: 59701 · I-90/I-15 crossroads of the Mountain West
BozemanZIP: 59718 · Fastest-growing consumer market in the state, I-90
Sweet GrassZIP: 59484 · I-15 port of entry to Coutts, Alberta

Montana Climate & Reefer Demand

Montana summers hit 90–100°F on the eastern plains, and winters fall to −20°F and colder, with chinook winds that swing the temperature 40 degrees in a day. Reefers here run in heat mode more months than they cool, protecting inbound produce and dairy from freezing.

Year-round: Montana is an inbound reefer market. Groceries, produce, and dairy roll in from the Midwest and West Coast to stock Billings, Bozeman, and Missoula, and beef, seed potatoes, and pulses ride back out.

July and August: Flathead Lake sweet cherries and the start of the wheat, barley, and lentil harvest across the Golden Triangle. Montana leads the nation in lentils and dry peas.

Winter: Pass closures, chain laws, and ground blizzards on I-90 and I-94 thin out the driver pool. Experienced OTR drivers who can run the northern tier in January are in demand.

Your Montana Lanes with Astel

Astel's core corridors run West ↔ Midwest, and our Chicago yard is the anchor. Montana drivers load in Billings, Missoula, and Great Falls and take I-94 and I-90 east across the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin toward Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Chicago. We're growing, so drivers must be ready to run all 48 contiguous states.

Billings → Chicago Missoula → Chicago Great Falls → Minneapolis Bozeman → Milwaukee Butte → Omaha Billings → Indianapolis

Montana Freight by the Numbers

Long distances, few people, and freight that has to move by truck.

552 mi I-90 runs 552 miles across Montana, the longest stretch of I-90 in any single state, from Lookout Pass to the Wyoming line
#1 Montana is the top producer of lentils and dry peas in the U.S. and ranks second in barley. The Golden Triangle harvest fills trucks every August
2.16M Head of cattle in Montana as of January 2025, roughly two cows for every resident, and the beef leaves the state on reefers
−70°F The coldest temperature ever recorded in the lower 48 states, at Rogers Pass in 1954. Reefers in Montana earn their keep in heat mode

Montana CDL Class A Requirements

If you already hold your Montana CDL-A, you're ready to apply right now. If you're not yet licensed, here's exactly what the Montana Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) requires.

⚠️
Montana-specific note for OTR drivers: I-90 crosses 552 miles of Big Sky Country and climbs three mountain passes: Lookout at the Idaho line, Homestake east of Butte, and Bozeman Pass, where chain-up laws kick in and the highway closes in ground blizzards. Rogers Pass holds the lower-48 record at −70°F, and crosswinds near Livingston can push an empty reefer across the lane. As a company driver on Astel's fleet equipment, we handle the maintenance and the compliance, so you focus on the road. For the most current MT CDL requirements, visit mvdmt.gov.

Montana Driver FAQ

How much do truck drivers earn in Montana with Astel?
Astel drivers gross $2,400–2,700+ per week, which works out to $90,000–$110,000 per year. The rate is a flat $0.80 per mile for drivers with 1+ year of experience, with a guaranteed $2,400 weekly minimum and a $2,000 sign-on bonus, and every mile is paid, both loaded and deadhead, calculated ZIP-to-ZIP.
Do I need to live in Montana to apply?
No. We hire CDL-A drivers from all 48 contiguous states. Montana is one of our active hiring regions: orientation takes place at our Chicago yard, then you run lanes that regularly load in and out of Billings, Missoula, and Great Falls on the way to the Midwest.
What freight will I haul from Montana?
Mostly refrigerated: beef and dairy heading east, seed potatoes and Flathead cherries in season, and inbound grocery and produce loads that stock Billings, Bozeman, and Missoula from the Midwest and West Coast. Montana runs long miles in both directions, and reefer demand holds year-round.
What are the requirements to get hired?
A valid CDL Class A, age 21 or older, and a clean driving record. One or more years of OTR experience is preferred. Newer drivers can still apply: a security deposit applies only with under 3 months of OTR experience.
How often will I be home?
The schedule is OTR: 4+ weeks on the road followed by about 1 week at home. Routes include night dispatch, so you should be comfortable driving nights.
