New Hampshire Runs on Warehouses, the Port, and I-93

New Hampshire is the Merrimack Valley warehouse belt an hour north of Boston, the Port of Portsmouth on the Seacoast, and two of New England's biggest grocery wholesalers headquartered in Keene and Pembroke. Everything that feeds northern New England rolls up I-93 and I-95, and the Mass Pike is one exit away.

Major New Hampshire Freight Hubs

The freight is concentrated in the southern tier: Manchester, Londonderry, and Nashua along I-93 and the Everett Turnpike, Portsmouth and Pease Tradeport on the Seacoast, and the grocery-wholesale cluster around Keene and Concord.

ManchesterZIP: 03103 · I-93/I-293 airport-side industrial parks
LondonderryZIP: 03053 · Stonyfield yogurt plant & I-93 Exit 5 distribution parks
NashuaZIP: 03063 · Everett Turnpike warehouse corridor at the MA line
PortsmouthZIP: 03801 · Port of New Hampshire (Market Street Terminal) & Pease Tradeport
KeeneZIP: 03431 · C&S Wholesale Grocers headquarters
PembrokeZIP: 03275 · Associated Grocers of New England DC off I-93/I-393

New Hampshire Climate & Reefer Demand

New Hampshire summers run 80–90°F in the Merrimack Valley, while winters drop below 0°F, and Mount Washington posts some of the worst weather on the continent. Reefers cool in July and run in heat mode from December to March to keep dairy and produce from freezing.

September – October: Apple harvest in the Merrimack and Connecticut river valleys. Apples are one of the state's top farm products and move out chilled.

Year-round: Dairy and yogurt out of Londonderry, and grocery freight restocked daily by the wholesale hubs in Keene and Pembroke that supply independent stores across New England.

Winter: Nor'easters and ice on I-93 thin out the driver pool, so OTR drivers who can handle a northern New England winter are in demand.

Your New Hampshire Lanes with Astel

Astel's core corridors run West ↔ Midwest, and our Chicago yard is the anchor. New Hampshire drivers load in Manchester, Nashua, and Portsmouth, drop onto I-90 at the Massachusetts line, and run west across New York and Ohio toward Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago. We're growing, and drivers must be ready to run all 48 contiguous states.

Manchester → Chicago Nashua → Chicago Portsmouth → Cleveland Londonderry → Detroit Keene → Indianapolis Concord → Columbus

New Hampshire Freight by the Numbers

A small state that feeds the whole of northern New England.

131 mi I-93 runs its full 131-mile New Hampshire length from the Massachusetts line through Manchester and Concord into the White Mountains: the state's freight spine
16 mi New Hampshire's stretch of I-95 (the Blue Star Turnpike) is the shortest in any state on the route, but every truck between Boston and Maine crosses it
521K t Over 521,000 tons of road salt came through the Port of New Hampshire's Market Street Terminal in fiscal year 2024/25, then got trucked out to the whole region
C&S Keene is home to C&S Wholesale Grocers, one of the largest grocery wholesalers in the U.S., and a constant source of reefer freight

New Hampshire CDL Class A Requirements

If you already hold your New Hampshire CDL-A, you're ready to apply right now. If you're not yet licensed, here's exactly what the New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires.

Requirement Details Status for Astel Position

Valid NH Driver's License Current, non-suspended New Hampshire driver's license Required
Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) Must hold CLP for minimum 14 days before the skills test Pre-CDL Step
ELDT Training Entry-Level Driver Training from an FMCSA-registered provider Pre-CDL Step

OTR Experience 1+ year over-the-road experience preferred Preferred by Astel
⚠️
New Hampshire-specific note for OTR drivers: the Granite State is short on interstate miles but long on winter — nor'easters, black ice on I-93 and I-89, and the two-lane Franconia Notch Parkway where I-93 squeezes through the White Mountains at 45 mph. Tolls on the Everett, Spaulding, and Blue Star turnpikes are collected at gantries. As a company driver on Astel's fleet equipment, maintenance and compliance are handled by us, so you focus on the road. For the most current NH CDL requirements, visit dmv.nh.gov.
