Idaho Potatoes, Dairy, and the I-84 Corridor

Idaho grows about a third of America's potatoes, ranks among the top three dairy states, and runs the world's largest yogurt plant. Nearly all of it ships in a reefer. I-84 and I-15 tie Boise, the Magic Valley, and Idaho Falls to Salt Lake City, and from there I-80 runs straight to our Chicago yard.

Major Idaho Freight Hubs

Idaho's freight lives along I-84: the Treasure Valley around Boise, Nampa, and Caldwell handles distribution and sugar, the Magic Valley around Twin Falls, Jerome, and Burley is a wall of dairy and frozen-potato plants, and Idaho Falls on I-15 is the gateway for Eastern Idaho spuds and grain.

BoiseZIP: 83716 · Gowen Road industrial corridor, I-84/I-184
NampaZIP: 83687 · Amalgamated Sugar factory, Treasure Valley DC belt
Twin FallsZIP: 83301 · Chobani plant, Lamb Weston, Magic Valley food hub
JeromeZIP: 83338 · Agropur and Idaho Milk Products dairy plants, I-84
BurleyZIP: 83318 · McCain Foods fries, I-84 Mini-Cassia
Idaho FallsZIP: 83402 · I-15 hub for Eastern Idaho potatoes and grain

Idaho Climate & Reefer Demand

Idaho is high desert and mountains: Boise summers reach 95–100°F and bone-dry, while winters in Idaho Falls and the Magic Valley fall below 0°F. Potatoes need temperature control both ways, and so do cheese and yogurt. Reefers run cooling in July and heat mode in January.

September–October: Potato harvest across the Snake River Plain, plus the sugar-beet campaign at Nampa, Twin Falls, and Paul. Fresh potatoes then ship out of storage cellars on reefers for the next nine months.

Year-round: Frozen fries from Burley, American Falls, and Twin Falls, plus yogurt and cheese from the Magic Valley. Idaho dairy runs 365 days a year and leaves the state cold.

Winter: Mountain passes and chain laws thin out the driver pool. Experienced OTR drivers who handle Rocky Mountain winters are in demand.

Your Idaho Lanes with Astel

Astel's core corridors run West ↔ Midwest, and Idaho is a western anchor: I-84 links Boise and the Magic Valley to Salt Lake City, I-15 brings Idaho Falls down to the same junction, and I-80 carries the load east across Wyoming and Nebraska to our Chicago yard. We're growing, and drivers must be ready to run all 48 contiguous states.

Boise → Chicago Twin Falls → Chicago Idaho Falls → Denver Nampa → Minneapolis Burley → Kansas City Jerome → Salt Lake City

Idaho Freight by the Numbers

A farm state whose main exports all travel at 34 degrees or below.

1/3 Idaho grows about a third of all U.S. potatoes, roughly 13.8 billion pounds in 2025, the top potato state by a wide margin
1M sq ft Chobani's Twin Falls plant is the largest yogurt factory in the world, and a $500 million expansion is taking it to 1.6 million square feet
12,000 t Sugar beets processed every day at the Amalgamated Sugar factory in Nampa during the fall and winter campaign
276 + 196 mi I-84 runs 276 miles across southern Idaho and I-15 runs 196 miles up the east side, and both funnel into Salt Lake City and I-80

If you already hold your Idaho CDL-A, you're ready to apply right now. If you're not yet licensed, here's exactly what the Idaho Transportation Department, Division of Motor Vehicles (ITD DMV), requires.

⚠️
Idaho-specific note for OTR drivers: Idaho is mountain-pass country. Lookout Pass and Fourth of July Pass on I-90, Monida Pass on I-15 at the Montana line, and Malad Summit toward Utah all see chain-up conditions from November to April, and Idaho enforces chain requirements when the signs go up. Add winter fog inversions in the Treasure Valley and wildfire smoke on I-84 in late summer. As a company driver on Astel's fleet equipment, maintenance and compliance are handled by us, so you focus on the road. For the most current ID CDL requirements, visit itd.idaho.gov.

Idaho Driver FAQ

How much do truck drivers earn in Idaho with Astel?
Astel drivers gross $2,400–2,700+ per week, which works out to $90,000–$110,000 per year. The rate is a flat $0.80 per mile for drivers with 1+ year of experience, with a guaranteed $2,400 weekly minimum and a $2,000 sign-on bonus, and all miles are paid, loaded and deadhead, calculated ZIP-to-ZIP.
Do I need to live in Idaho to apply?
No. We hire CDL-A drivers from all 48 contiguous states. Idaho is one of our active hiring regions: orientation takes place at our Chicago yard, then you run lanes that regularly load in and out of Boise, Twin Falls, and Idaho Falls on the way to Salt Lake City and the Midwest.
What freight will I haul from Idaho?
Mostly refrigerated: fresh potatoes and frozen fries from the Magic Valley and Eastern Idaho, yogurt and cheese from Twin Falls and Jerome, and grocery freight out of the Treasure Valley. Potatoes ship from storage for most of the year and dairy never stops, so reefer volume in Idaho stays steady.
What are the requirements to get hired?
A valid CDL Class A, age 21 or older, and a clean driving record. One or more years of OTR experience is preferred. Newer drivers can still apply. A security deposit applies only with under 3 months of OTR experience.
How often will I be home?
The schedule is OTR: 4+ weeks on the road followed by about 1 week at home. Routes include night dispatch, so you should be comfortable driving nights.
