Wyoming's 402 Miles of I-80 Between the West and the Midwest

Wyoming is the least-populated state in the country, but every reefer running between California, Utah and Chicago crosses it on I-80. Cheyenne sits where I-80 meets I-25 and hosts the regional distribution centers of Walmart and Lowe's; the rest of the state ships coal, soda ash, oil and beef. Here the freight is the lane itself.

Major Wyoming Freight Hubs

Cheyenne is the logistics capital. The Walmart DC on Logistics Drive serves stores in Wyoming and neighboring states, and the Lowe's regional DC supplies more than 70 stores across the West. Casper works I-25 and the oil patch, Rock Springs and Green River sit on the world's largest trona deposit, Gillette is Powder River Basin coal on I-90, and Evanston is the I-80 gate to Utah.

Cheyenne (north)ZIP: 82009 · I-80/I-25 junction, Walmart distribution center on Logistics Dr
Cheyenne (south)ZIP: 82007 · Lowe's regional distribution center, Christensen Rd industrial area
CasperZIP: 82601 · I-25 hub of central Wyoming, oil and gas services
Rock SpringsZIP: 82901 · I-80, trona mines and soda ash plants of the Green River Basin
GilletteZIP: 82718 · Powder River Basin coal mines, I-90 corridor
EvanstonZIP: 82930 · Western gate of I-80, 80 miles from Salt Lake City

Wyoming Climate & Reefer Demand

Wyoming is high, dry and windy: Cheyenne sits at 6,100 feet with winter lows near 10–15°F and colder on the passes, so reefers run in heat mode from November to March. Summers are mild, 80–85°F, but the sun at altitude still keeps units cycling on produce and meat.

Year-round: Transit reefer freight, California and Utah produce moving east, Midwest meat and dairy moving west, is the backbone of Wyoming trucking, and the Cheyenne DCs pull inbound grocery loads every day.

October to March: High-wind and blizzard closures on I-80 between Laramie and Rawlins and on I-25 north of Cheyenne close the road, loads stack up, and experienced drivers who know the closure gates earn their keep.

Summer through fall: Cattle season brings Wyoming ranches shipping beef east, and the Torrington sugar-beet campaign adds fall volume in the Platte Valley.

Your Wyoming Lanes with Astel

Astel's core corridors run West ↔ Midwest, and our Chicago yard is the anchor. I-80 across Wyoming is that corridor: Cheyenne to Chicago is about 970 miles east through Omaha and Des Moines, and Salt Lake City is a day west of Evanston. We're growing, so drivers must be ready to run all 48 contiguous states.

Cheyenne → Chicago Cheyenne → Salt Lake City Rock Springs → Omaha Evanston → Des Moines Casper → Denver Gillette → Minneapolis

Wyoming Freight by the Numbers

Few people, big loads, and one of the most important interstates in the country.

402 mi Length of I-80 across Wyoming, from Pine Bluffs on the Nebraska line to Evanston at the Utah border, the spine of the West–Midwest lane
8,640 ft Sherman Summit between Cheyenne and Laramie, the highest point on the entire length of I-80 from New York to San Francisco
#1 Wyoming has been the top coal-producing state since 1986. The Powder River Basin mines near Gillette supply about 40% of U.S. coal
90% Share of the world's known trona reserves in the Green River Basin, where the soda ash plants near Rock Springs are the largest in the country

Wyoming CDL Class A Requirements

If you already hold your Wyoming CDL-A, you're ready to apply right now. If you're not yet licensed, here's exactly what the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) Driver Services requires.

OTR Experience 1+ year over-the-road experience preferred Preferred by Astel
⚠️
Wyoming-specific note for OTR drivers: I-80 across Wyoming is the toughest stretch of the West–Midwest lane. Sherman Summit at 8,640 feet is the highest point on the entire interstate, crosswinds of 60+ mph blow over light trailers between Laramie and Rawlins, and WYDOT closes the road for high wind and ground blizzards many times each winter. Watch the variable speed limits and the closure gates. As a company driver on Astel's fleet equipment, we handle maintenance and compliance, so you focus on the road. For the most current WY CDL requirements, visit dot.state.wy.us.

Wyoming Driver FAQ

How much do truck drivers earn in Wyoming with Astel?
Astel drivers gross $2,400–2,700+ per week, which works out to $90,000–$110,000 per year. The rate is a flat $0.80 per mile for drivers with 1+ year of experience, with a guaranteed $2,400 weekly minimum and a $2,000 sign-on bonus, and all miles are paid, both loaded and deadhead, calculated ZIP-to-ZIP.
Do I need to live in Wyoming to apply?
No. We hire CDL-A drivers from all 48 contiguous states. Wyoming is one of our active hiring regions: orientation takes place at our Chicago yard, then you run lanes that regularly load in and out of Cheyenne, Casper, and Rock Springs on the way between the West and the Midwest.
What freight will I haul from Wyoming?
Mostly refrigerated transit freight on I-80: produce from California and Utah heading east, meat and dairy from the Midwest heading west, plus inbound grocery loads for the Cheyenne distribution centers and Wyoming beef in season. Wyoming itself is a pass-through state, so miles here are long and steady year-round.
What are the requirements to get hired?
A valid CDL Class A, age 21 or older, and a clean driving record. One or more years of OTR experience is preferred. Newer drivers can still apply — a security deposit applies only with under 3 months of OTR experience.
How often will I be home?
The schedule is OTR: 4+ weeks on the road followed by about 1 week at home. Routes include night dispatch, so you should be comfortable driving nights.
